5 out of 5 stars Buy this ink. Buy several. You'll need them!   April 3, 2009
What Do You Mean I'm Out of Ink? (USA)

This ink is used in the Canon MP980. Here's what Canon doesn't tell you. While the printer has six (6!) ink cartridges, if any one of the six is completely out -- even if you are not using that one at the moment -- your printer is dead in the water. Zero, zip, nada.

And no store sells them locally! (At this time, in my area.) So if it's an emergency, you're a goner.

The following do not carry the GY221 in the store _nor_ on their websites (at the time I'm writing this): Best Buy, Costco, Office Depot, Office Max, Target, and Walmart. Staples does not carry it in the store, but it is available on their website. Amazon is your friend. And it's cheaper than Staples. But internet purchases take time to arrive.

So do yourself a favor and avoid the "dead printer syndrome" by buying several now. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable information   October 1, 2009

I was able to disable the ink monitoring system by holding the stop button on my MP980 for about five seconds. I have done this only for the gray and only to print until I get a new cartridge. It appears by my testing that this system is re enabled by installing a new cartridge or removing and reinstalling the old one. This is explained in the online manual that came with the MP980 although it is buried. Tim

5 out of 5 stars A great innovation for the Pixma All-in-ones   October 22, 2009

I use my Pixma printer to print documents and have done a little bit of photo printing. When my magenta tank ran out, I tried getting a non-oem tank and had problems with it. When I sucked it up and bought the Canon OEM cartridge, everything worked fine. I am glad that I can buy tanks separately and replace as needed. That helps a lot.

I'll continue to try a non-OEM on occasion ... but for definitive compatibility, I'll buy these as needed.

5 out of 5 stars Keep spares on hand, you'll need them   September 23, 2009

As another reviewer noted, these cartridges are hard to find and not necessarily "bundled" with the others used by an MP-980 since the other printers those bundles work with don't necessarily need this particular one. Amazon sells the real thing, not a generic knock-off. Good pricing too.

Gray is the problem color. I have only found it on-line with Amazon. None of my local stores stock it; even their info on my model don't show the need for the separate color. It is so easy to order on-line.
